Overheard Wisdom

This year kids will be giving homeowners candy for Halloween.

Ok, I’m back

September 29th, 2008

Took the site back(at least for now) from the spammers.

Here is what I know.

Liquid, is doing very well. They had a great weekend with Jeremiah and his gang.

Cool Hand Luke’s is very close to open at the corner of capitol and Idaho.

Mac & Charles is booking some of the punk overflow from the Bouquet and using the Gustos side for the gigs.

The Lucky Dog, has a full bar now and is “straight friendly.”

What I think

At the Bouquet there has been a ton of remodel and clean up work done, but the green paper signals it still isn’t open. We have been hearing “open this week” for weeks. Boisee.com’s guess is license problems, but it is only a hunch.

The Grizzly Rose is not living up to expectations.

Also, there may be legislation that will increase the number of liquor license available. That combined with the general malaise of the biz,  is the reason so many have been for sale of late and the price has dropped.

Spamalot-I mean a lot of spam

May have noticed that I haven’t been posting this week. Had a bit of a problem. Looks like it is fixed. However, like the government. Bad behavior has lead to more rules.

From now on you will have to have your 1st comment approved. Once your approved your in for good. Sorry for the hassle, but I gotta do it.

Liqiud is, well liquid!

September 24th, 2008

Liquid is open. Come down and join the very talented and beautiful day bartender.

Liquid is where the old Funny Bone was. Across from the Ha’ Penny in BoDo.

Mortensen Presents and Gruntwerks Events are very proud to announce the upcoming performance of the Legendary Rhythm and Blues Revue, featuring the Tommy Castro Band and an all-star line-up including Kenny Neal, Magic Dick, and Deanna Bogart, as each one takes turns leading the band. The opening band for the show is Boise’s own Blues Rock teen sensation Denae.

The Legendary Rhythm and Blues Revue will be in Boise at The Egyptian Theatre on September 30, 2008 at 7 PM. Tickets are $25, $30, $50 and are available at Select-A-Seat and www.IdahoTickets.com.

The Legendary Rhythm and Blues Revue was born when these amazing musicians, each headliners in their own right, were booked to play together by Roger Naber to headline The Legendary Rhythm and Blues Cruise (the premier Blues event. The Legendary Rhythm and Blues Revue is currently touring the U.S., with their incendiary live shows.

TOMMY CASTRO
At the core of the Legendary Rhythm and Blues Revue is renowned guitar slinger and vocalist Tommy Castro and his band. A native of San Jose, CA, Castro has become a Bay Area legend over the last two decades, garnering countless awards for his infectiously rocking brand of blues, and earning a national spotlight leading the house band on NBC-TV’s “Comedy Showcase” for three seasons. Castro has released a series of widely acclaimed CDs over the last decade, and was personally chosen as the opening act for two tours by the King of the Blues, B.B. King. Tommy Castro was also chosen as The BB King Blues Entertainer of the Year and his new album Painkiller was chosen as Album of the Year in 2008.

KENNY NEAL
Kenny Neal was born in New Orleans and raised in Baton Rouge, and through the years, he has shared the stage or worked with a who’s-who list of blues and R& B greats at one time or another, including B.B. King, Bonnie Raitt, Muddy Waters, Aaron Neville, Buddy Guy and John Lee Hooker. Signing with Alligator Records in 1988, Kenny began releasing a series of consistently lauded albums featuring his laid-back, Baton Rouge blues, with a modern spin on the Louisiana sound he grew up with. The Chicago Tribune pegged Kenny as “one of a mere handful of truly inventive young contemporary guitarists, Neal has something fresh to say and the chops with which to say it,” while AllMusic said his “gruff-before-their-time vocals retain their swamp sensibility, while assuming a bright contemporary feel that tabs him as a leading contender for future blues stardom.”

MAGIC DICK
Magic Dick is best known for his many years as the harmonica man in legendary blues/rock band The J. Geils Band, which he co-founded in 1968. As a member of that group, he toured the world extensively for over 15 years, headlining stadiums and festivals and releasing fourteen successful major label albums on Warner Bros. and EMI, culminating in the Platinum-certified album, “Freeze Frame”, which spent 70 weeks on the national Billboard album charts, including four weeks at #1. Magic Dick also released two more powerful albums with his own group Blues Time which featured J. Geils on guitar. One of the most influential and highly respected harmonica players of his generation, Magic Dick has shared stages with many of the greatest names in blues music, as well as branching out into more adventurous territory with artists such as Patty Smyth, Debbi Harry, Full Circle, The Del Fuegos and others.
DEANNA BOGART
Blues and boogie-woogie pianist, sax player, vocalist, and songwriter Deanna Bogart has been leading her own band since the late 1980s, playing thousands of shows and establishing herself as an unforgettable live performer. Along the way she has shared the stage with widely diverse range of artists, including Ray Charles, Spyro Gyra, Buddy Guy, Leon Russell, Robert Cray, James Brown, They Might Be Giants, Little Feat, Brian Setzer and many others in venues across North America and Europe. Bogart has released seven CDs and appeared on numerous compilations, highlighting an impressive musical range that includes jazz, western swing, roots, rock and more, in addition to her deep blues roots.

Delta Groove, The Legendary Rhythm & Blues Revue record company, C.E.O. Randy Chortkoff says, “Getting a line-up of this caliber together for a single show or a recording session is one thing, but having them out on the road together as a working band, and getting as tight and polished as they’ve become, brings things up to an entirely different level. And I’ve always felt that live shows catch a kind of interaction and excitement that you don’t always get in a studio recording, so to be able to put out a CD of some of the very best of the best is a real treat…I’m very excited by what I’ve heard, and since they’re still on tour and recording more shows that we may use, I believe this release is going to be a monster.”

I wonder?

September 18th, 2008

This from Rick. . .

Admittedly, it’s not Boise, but I’m feeling a certain kinship for the impact of the fire in Ketchum. Whiskey’s is clearly an institution of state-wide stature, and I find it odd that a former sister-club of one of Boise’s edgier nightspots (is DLR owned by the same company that owns China Blue?) brought the fire into existence. Who held the insurance on that building, I wonder…
Me? I can’t imagine Sun Valley without Whiskey Jaques. Saw Bruce Willis make a total fool of himself with a harmonica one night. Add in years of Boise bands, northwest road warriors like the Clumsy Lovers and mid level touring bands and you get a idea of the culture that may have been wiped out in the fire. Bummer
Whiskey’s total lack of BS was rare indeed in “the valley.”. Hopefully it will recover from the flames.
