Hello Dr. Dave…
I’m remembering our discussion at Red Feather about the Martini and the common misnomer that today’s Martini is anything even close to the original. I’ve always been of the mind that the original Martini made with Sweet Vermouth probably came from the Martinez… and that fabulous marketing and the American vodka obsession, (which will always elude me,) turned the Martini into today’s insipid version of a vermouthless and flavorless cocktail in a funny glass. To support my historical evidence of the path leading up to the vapid vodka shaken, I dug up this old essay by my friend and cocktail historian, Robert Hess. He’s respected as a drink aficionado while I am known as the local cocktail brat, so I thought his story may be more convincing. It’s certainly better written: http://www.drinkboy.com/Essays/TheMartini.html
Anyway, let me know if you check it out… and if you’ve been swayed… ?
Great shot, David!
John
